What is a brain injury?
A brain injury normally surfaces after serious trauma to the head in cases such as road traffic accidents or workplace accidents. The trauma damages the brain cells and can cause several symptoms depending on the are of the brain affected. Focal brain damage is to a localized area and can affect only that area of the brain resulting in loss of the particular function that brain manages. Damage to several areas of the brain is referred to as a closed head injury.
Brain damage can also arise from medical negligence where the treatment has been below standard and the patient has not had enough oxygen and the brain suffers a stroke. We have also dealt with cases where the brain, following a head injury, has started to swell and the medical professionals have failed to spot it in time. Unfortunately, a larger proportion than usual personal injury cases concerning the brain lead to severe injuries and fatalities.
